Odem Bands Schedule – Week of 2/11/2019

Before getting to this week’s schedule I would like to congratulate all of our students on their outstanding performances at UIL Region Solo and Ensemble last week! Odem JH had 3 students earn Superior Medals, and many others were given ratings of Excellent! Odem HS brought back a total of 26 Superior Medals with 4 Soloists and 3 Ensembles advancing to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest in June! Please see the Solo and Ensemble section below for the medalists!

The Odem JH Bands Fundraiser through Mixed Bags is due tomorrow to Mr. Williams. Please convert any cash to checks/money orders before sending it in – we do not accept cash in the band hall. Thanks for your help with this!

Wednesday through Saturday Mr. Williams and I will be traveling up with our All-State Clarinetist, Zenaida Lara, for her All-State Clinic/Concert and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. She will have her final state chair placement audition on Wednesday and we wish her well on that audition! If you would like to come in support of her concert it will be on Saturday at 9am in the Lila Cockrell Theater at the San Antonio Convention Center. Admission is Free and students might benefit/enjoy a trip afterwards through the exhibit hall that is open until 1pm.

Finally we will have a booster meeting Tuesday night at 7pm in the HS Band Hall. The Booster meeting will focus on the upcoming Windi and Jazzi Fundraiser coming in April. The Owl Band Boosters are also going to be looking for some new officers for the coming year as terms are coming up in May. The Owl Band Boosters are one of the most important cogs in the machine for the Odem Bands, please consider volunteering your time in some capacity for them!

ACT Testing Dates:

As we approach the end of the year most Juniors should be taking their ACT Tests/planning for future dates. There are April and June dates that are still to come this year that would be a good set of dates for students to plan to take the test. With the ACT test studies show that every time a student takes the test they generally improve 2 or 3 points. Taking it early is a good plan!

The dates for next school year are not yet released, but I would like to make sure that students/parents know not to schedule the October 2019 test for OHS Band Members. That will most likely fall on the date of Area Marching Contest. There is usually a date in July, September, and December for students who are looking for alternative dates. The counselors office can help students with determining the steps for registration for the exam.

Marching Band Physical Requirement:

UIL voted this fall to require Physicals be performed on all students participating in Marching Band beginning August 1st. We will be working with Coach Huerta to include students into the option of doing them at school at the same time as sports this spring. All students must have a physical every other year, and their physical can count for both athletics and band. I will speak with Coach Huerta to determine a list of which students have theirs to count for this upcoming year. Students may have them done at any time before next August.

In the event that a physical determines a student cannot march we are allowed to have the physician advise us as to a capacity they can serve in. (Such as Front Ensemble)

We do not wish for this to be a stumbling block in participation, but it is a decision I do feel is in the best interest of our students health! Upon completion of the physicals we will need that documentation.
