Odem Bands Schedule – Week of 10/9/2023

Following a successful clinic this past weekend with Mr. Jesse Lotspeich, and trumpet professor Dr. Mary Thornton, this week begins our UIL Contest Season! Saturday, The Spirit of OHS performs at 6:30pm at AC Jones HS in Beeville. Every student must be in attendance as this is our qualifying performance for hopefully advancing to Area two weeks later on the 28th! Saturday is also a Annular Solar Eclipse, so UIL has pushed all of our performances back a little further than what they were last year to enable space around the event. The maximum portion of the eclipse is supposed to occur at 11:58am in our area, and will complete by 1:38 of any coverage of the sun. We do plan to do our walkthrough at 1pm, so some obstruction of the sun will still be going on. I would encourage students/parents to look through the safety precautions NASA has listed here: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2023/safety/ I will have about ten eclipse glasses that students can trade off using on our practice field from 11:45am-12:10pm or so before the run-through to see something that won’t be in our region again for 20+ years.

After that though we have to be moving and getting ready to travel to Beeville. We’ll go through our traditional preparations then, as well as feed the students, before we board buses at 3pm. When we arrive at the stadium we’ll unload and head to our warm-up site. At the contest we do need help with staging front ensemble equipment and props, if any parent is available, please find Mr. Williams in the parking lot and he’ll let you know where you are needed. We appreciate all of the parents who have regularly given us assistance!

Spectator tickets are $6 for anyone 5 and up, and must be purchased online here: https://uilmusicregion14.ludus.com . Please be aware that Beeville ISD has a clear bag policy at all of their events.

Announcement of ratings is scheduled not long after our performance at around 7:15pm. We’ll pack up then and return to the school. We know there is a quinceañera for one of our members that day. Students need to be there for the contest performance, and then may complete the alternative district transportation form so they may be checked out and returned for the dance. It is imperative we have students for the contest performance though, even one student can create a hole on the field, or missing parts of music, and prevent us from achieving at the level needed to earn a Superior Rating. Please let us know if you have any specific questions about this.

The following weekend (10/21) we are hosting the UIL 2A Area contest. We need adult volunteers for this event to make it a success and great experience for participating bands. Please sign-up here for a spot!https://tinyurl.com/3khmc997 (Students will have their own sign-ups) Please note all students must be in attendance for this contest, and we will have an exhibition performance following the last competing band during the judge’s verification period.

The week after that, on October 28th we will compete in our own Area Marching Contest in Beeville at the 3A UIL Area Contest in Beeville for a chance at the UIL State Marching Contest.  We quickly hitting the middle of ‘Bandtober’ and appreciate all of the support of these students!
