Odem Bands Schedule: Week of 10/2/2017

It always amazes me how quickly we pass from the end of July to the beginning of October and our contest season begins. This week is no different as we approach our first contest on Saturday in Goliad. Please read below for details – especially on ticket prices for this event.

Friday we will also have our next big home game versus Taft. I anticipate this will be a very full crowd that night due to the ongoing rivalry nature of the game. We very much need volunteers to help with the event, or any of the next two home games that follow this. Please note that volunteers do get their students spring fees waived for spending their time in the concession stand. Please go to this https://www.charmsoffice.com/charms/parents.asp?username=OdemHSBand link to sign-up. Ignore the student password section as you don’t have to do anything there. Just click Volunteer needs at the top and select a date on the next page and enter your information.

Florida Trip Payments:

Please note that we need payments for October coming in, and any student add-ons for the trip by Tuesday. It’s imperative we have a firm count for airfare here soon. We also have ongoing payments to our travel company that we must pay each month from here until April. All payments are made for the trip to Owl Band Boosters.

Friday’s Game:

Due to Hurricane Harvey the Taft game was rescheduled for this Friday. We will have a rehearsal from 2:30pm-4:00pm and then give the students a break until 5:30pm when they need to be back at the Band Hall. As with all performances/rehearsals this is a mandatory graded event.

USBands Goliad Marching Contest:

Saturday we will compete at our first contest which is the USBands Goliad Showcase. This is a great contest for our band as we get judged by a large panel of judges and then follow awards a couple hours later with an on-field clinic with those judges. When we participated a couple years ago we received a lot of very useful feedback. Goliad hosts the contest, but the operations are done by an outside group, USBands. I want to make that clear because the ticket prices are set by USBands – not Goliad. When I received prices a week ago I hoped maybe we would have some luck at correcting them, but USBands is sticking with a price of $17/ticket for admission to this contest. Please direct any complaints about those prices to USBands and not the Goliad volunteers working the contest.

If you do wish to attend, and not pay that high price, we do have a limited number of ‘staff’ passes that we would be willing to pass out if you can help us Friday night in the concession stand or moving equipment on Saturday. Additionally I am looking for one parent to videotape for us. Please contact me early in the week if you are interested in one of these.

Students are required to stay for the entire event, including the clinic, for this contest. You may pick students up only after the clinic has concluded in this case.

Report time for students will be 8:30am on Saturday. We will do a runthrough, get dressed, and then get going on the road. Our performance is at 1:45pm, and the clinic is scheduled for 7:20pm. (Awards at 4:45pm) We will feed the students lunch and dinner on this day.
