Odem Bands Schedule Week of 3/20/2017
I hope this message finds you well as end our Spring Breaks and enter the home stretch of the school year. Please note the next several weeks will be packed with events, so please look closely at these messages as they are sent out. Of significance this week we have our Pre-UIL Concert tomorrow (Monday) night and the TAMUK Jazz Festival this weekend! We also have our upcoming fundraiser, UIL Contest, and a few other events in the next several weeks!
Tomorrow’s (Monday) Pre-UIL Concert
Tomorrow (Monday) evening our annual Pre-UIL Contest Concert will be held in the Cafetorium. We bring in three judges from around the area who are experienced judges to critique us and help better prepare our final preparations. If a student is in one of the performing groups they must attend the concert as it is a major portion of their grade for the six-weeks. The concert begins at 6:30pm with the OJH Symphonic Winds. The OHS Screeching Owl Jazz Band, OHS Symphonic Band, and OHS Wind Ensemble will then follow their performance. We ask that you allow your students to stay for the later groups and help move equipment back to the Band Hall following the concert.
Call Times are:
5:45pm – OJH Symphonic Winds (in Cafetorium)
6:00pm – OHS Screeching Owl Jazz Band (Band Hall)
6:25pm – OJH Symphonic Band (Choir Room)
6:40pm – OHS Wind Ensemble
Concert Attire:
HS Students: Ladies – Black Blouse/Black Slacks (No skirts/dresses), Gentlemen – Long Sleeve Black Button Down Shirt, Black Slacks, and Black Dress Shoes.
JH Students: Ladies – Black Blouse/Black Slacks (No skirts/dresses), Gentlemen – White Button Down Shirt, Tie (Solid Navy Preferred), Black Slacks, and Black Dress Shoes.
Please be sure your student has clothes that fit prior to the concert day.
50th Annual Texas A&M University Kingsville Jazz Festival
The OHS Screeching Owl Jazz Band performs Friday at the 50th TAMUK Jazz Festival at 5:05pm at Jones Auditorium. The majority of students will leave after 6th period, with a few students brought immediately after school. Their performance is Free and Open to the Public. We would love to have some supporters there! We will return afterwards by about 6:30pm.
As of right now Saturday those students need to be at the Band Hall by 5:30pm. We will attend the TAMUK Jazz Concert featuring legendary jazz trumpet player Doc Severinson at 7pm. The awards ceremony for the festival is held at intermission. I estimate our return at about 9:45pm-10pm.
Please Note I consider it to be a truly special occasion for students to see Doc Severinson. Many people may recognize him from his time as the band leader of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity as he is 90 years old! Tickets are available for others as well at $10/ticket. Contact TAMUK for more information – I would recommend doing it early in the week!
Marches of the Past Dinner Fundraiser
Reminder every high school student was given 2 tickets for the Marches of the Past Fundraiser. We need those tickets being sold and money returned this coming Friday. Please help us sell out of space at this event! Students also need to bring their items for their classes’ silent auction basket. I will send a second e-mail about that on Tuesday. Reminder the event is April 8th and will need pretty much as much help as we can get!
2017 Marching Season Meetings
There will be no leadership meeting at lunch tomorrow. We will instead do Tuesday and Thursday this week. Instead of tomorrow’s meeting at 12:55pm I will play the first three movements of the show for any students who would like to hear it. I am very excited about the show having heard the first two movements so far! I am supposed to receive the third movement sometime today.
Guard practices continue to be Tuesday and Thursday after school this week. Drum Majors will meet Tuesday after school this week as well.

Monday: Band Hall Open until Concert
Concert Begins at 6:30pm (see above for Call Times for students arrival)
Tuesday: Student Leadership Meeting at Lunch
Guard Practice and Drum Major Practice After School until 5pm
Wednesday: Band Hall Open until 4:00pm
Thursday: Student Leadership Meeting at Lunch
Guard Practice and Drum Major Practice After School until 5pm
Friday: OHS TAMUK Jazz Festival Performance 5:05pm
Saturday: TAMUK Jazz Festival with Doc Severinson
