Odem Bands Schedule – Week of 5/6/2019

Thank you to everyone who attended this past weeks concert of the OJH Symphonic Winds and the Odem HS Bands! We’re beginning to roll through the last performances of the year for all of our groups with the next one tomorrow night (Monday) with the Odem JH Beginning Band and Odem JH Concert Band’s Spring Concert. The concert will begin at 6:30pm in the Odem HS Cafetorium with the Beginning Band followed by the Concert Band.

Beginning Band students should be dressed and in their seats by 5:45pm, and Concert Band in the OHS Band Hall by 6pm. Following the concert we ask that all students please help clear the stage – that should only take about 10 minutes if everyone pitches in.

Concert dress for OJH Band Members:
Ladies: Black Blouse/Black Slacks/Shoes
Gentlemen: White Button Down Shirt/Black Slacks/Socks/Dress Shoes and Tie (Preferably solid Navy Blue)

Friday we will hold tryouts for Drum Majors and Colorguard Members at 4pm. We will begin with drum majors and then move through the guard members. After school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week we will have practices for both until 5:00pm.

Saturday will be our final competition of the year for the Odem HS Wind Ensemble. Students need to be dressed in their concert clothes at the Band Hall by 7am to depart. We will be traveling to CT Johnson High School in San Antonio for the contest. We perform at 11:30am in their auditorium. The performance is Free and open to the public, and you are welcome to attend! We do ask that you take special care to make sure no additional sounds are made from phones or children during the performance in an effort to get the best recording the group can get for our Honor Band and Outstanding Performance Series Competitions. Following their performance we will go to Six Flags. Students should bring money for lunch/dinner and clothes to change into for the day. We plan to leave the park at 8pm, and should arrive back at OHS around 11pm.

Sunday we will be putting together an Alumni Jazz Band of past members of the Screeching Owl Jazz Band to celebrate our 10th Anniversary of the Band. If you know anyone who’s a past member please pass on the information to them! We’ll have the Alumni group play a few songs on the jazz concert the next day, and then join with current members for the end of the concert.

This week we are also planning on having band placement auditions at the JH for current 6th and 7th graders for next year. We plan to begin those on Wednesday. Please encourage your students to practice their etude and scales they need to play for the audition.

2019 Summer Band Schedule and Physicals

Please note that UIL has mandated that Marching Band Students now receive physicals prior to participation in outdoor activities. The new policy takes effect August 1st when all students must have one completed on the same biannual basis as Athletics. If a student has completed their physical this year with Athletics as a Freshman or Junior we will be able to count that towards this coming year. The Athletic Department is hosting physicals next Thursday, May 16th from 2:30pm-5:00pm that students can take care of this physical. Students must have $15 cash and have the form pre-filled out by parents/guardians with the medical history. Students only need to complete one physical if they are in Athletics and Band, it is not necessary to complete a separate one.
